Taiko

Taiko (太鼓) signifie tambour en japonais. Son écriture est composée de deux kanji : 太 qui signifie ‘gros’ et 鼓 pour ‘tambour’. Ce mot est utilisé majoritairement hors du Japon, les japonais lui préférant le terme Wadaiko (和太鼓) pour désigner les tambours nippons.

Les performances peuvent durer entre 5 et 25 minutes et sont très éprouvantes physiquement. Typiquement, elles suivent une structure en jo-ha-kyū (debut, arrêt, rapide). Cela signifie que le musique démarre doucement, s’accélère et fini rapidement. Autrement dit, la performance s’accélère significativement depuis le début jusqu’au grand final.

Selon la legende, la déesse solaire Amateratsu, se serait cachée dans une grotte pour échapper à son cruel petit frère. Le monde devint sombre et les autres divinités tentèrent d’appaiser Amateratsu pour rendre au monde sa lumière. Pour cela, ils organisèrent une grande fête où la shamane Ame no Uzume, dansa une danse érotique en frappant du pied un tube de bois. La danse fit rire les Dieux et le bruit attira Amateratsu à l’extérieur.

Taiko (太鼓) means drum in Japanese. Its name is composed with two kanji : the first one 太, means ‘big’ and the second one 鼓, ‘drum’. This word is mainly used outside Japan because Japanese prefer Wadaiko (和太鼓) to refer to Japanese drums.

The performances can last between 5 and 25 minutes and are really tiring. Typically, they follow a jo-ha-kyū (beginning, break, rapid) structure. It essentially means that all actions or efforts should begin slowly, speed up, and then end swiftly. The performance will speed up significantly towards the grand finale.

According to legend, the sun Goddess Amateratsu, hid herself in a cave to escape her cruel younger brother. The world became dark and other deities tried to appease Amateratsu to make the world bright again. They held a big party in front of the cave and Ame no Uzume danced an erotic dance, stamping her feet on a wooden tub. This dance made Gods laughing and the noise attracted Amateratsu outside her cave.
